flickr now supports videos – 90 seconds / 150 MB

What many of us have been waiting for is finally here. flickr.com has finally added video sharing features. At this point, the video features are only available to pro subscribers (paying customers).

The new video service looks highly integrated and it is a snap to use. Personally, I’m comfortable with the 90 seconds and/or 150MB limit – at this point in time. So far I find the compression, audio and colour quality very, very good. All in all a very nice addition to an already great service.

To try out this new service, I’ve uploaded the last minute penalty shot and goal for 1.FC Köln vs Gladbach.

It looked like 1.FC Köln was set to lose the match, but thankfully the game ended 1:1 with the equalizing penalty in the 90th minute.

WWII bomb found close to my apartment

Yesterday on the 3rd of January a British bomb (Image) of the “zehn Zentner” (German) type from World War II was found near my apartment in Cologne, Germany. As they were defusing the bomb, I was evacuated from my apartment complex and had to stay away for the night.

They managed to defuse it (German) during the night so I could move back in on the 4th. Many thanks to the insanely brave people of the bomb squad!

Have a look at some images of the situation as I was evacuated.

Last day of Plone Conference 2007

It’s over a week since the Plone Conference 2007 in Naples, Italy but I’ll try to wrap up my highlights from the third and last day regardless of the lag.

At the socializing dinner on the evening of the second day I had the unexpected fortune of finding myself seated at a table next to Roberto Allende from Menttes and Plone Cono Sur. He seemed like an interesting guy, so I decided to check out his speak “Plone Cono Sur: creating a Plone users group from scratch” on the following day.

Long story short: That talk really made my day. It was both funny and highly motivating. Watch it for yourself:

So as soon as I got back to Cologne I got in touch with the local Zope and Python User Groups with the goal of contributing as much as I can. Let’s hope we’ll have A PZP (Python Zope Plone) User Group in the region soon.

Lastly I’d like to thank Luiciano Ramalho for the neat t-shirt. I’ve never “slept” with a Brazilian before. It was, uh… special. ;)

So, where are you from?

I hail from the southern most town (no, I didn’t write it and I wonder why there’s nothing about the imense drug problems there) of Norway called Mandal. It’s a tiny little place internationally speaking with its ca. 14.000 inhabitants. Like many other people growing up in tiny places I moved out as soon as I could. That was 13 years ago. Much has happened since then and I currently find myself living in Cologne, Germany.

For those of you who may not know, Mandal is a coastal town, surrounded by beaches, small islands and the ocean. Growing up and living a five minutes walk from the coastline, I fell in love with the ocean at an early age. (For those of you who may not know, Cologne is like 200 Km from the (Dutch) coast). I do travel back to Mandal once a year to see family and friends, but from time to time I find myself missing the beaches, the islands and the ocean – even just the smell of it all.

As I find myself going through the images I shot of the coastline visiting Mandal last Christmas, the thought occurs to me that you too may have left somewhere. That you too may be missing some aspects of what you left behind. I thought I’d share what I’m missing by posting the images on flickr and invite you to have a look.

I would be thrilled to know what you’re missing by sharing your story – perhaps even with links to images – in the comments!

‘Wag the Long Tail’ in Cologne, Germany

I attended a seminar called “Wag the Long Tail” in the Rheinpalais today. Unfortunately it turned out to be not about The Long Tail at all, but more about what some refer to as “web2.0“. However I thought I’d share some images. Have a look at my set on flickr for more.

Thomas Schindler from hundertelf and cellcast.de, and Christian ‘MrTopf’ Scholz.

Heiko Hebig

Heiko Hebig (sorry for spelling your name wrong on twitter!) gave the best and by far the most honest and professional presentation, even showing off twitter. (Too bad it did not have much to do about The Long Tail, though)

Ehrensenf

And then there was Ehrensenf (sort of a German rocketboom – not that relevant or funny anymore). Not too sure what they had to contribute, though. Truth be told we left before they got to say anything profound. Sorry you guys, but I’d had about enough at that time.
